Jesus’s Prayer in the Garden

« Back to Main News Listing

Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours be done. (Luke 22:42 NKJV)

If ever there was a private prayer prayed to the Father in heaven, this is it.  There was no one in earshot to hear this prayer.  It was exclusively between the Father and the Son, yet it is a prayer that has been publicized around the world.  Every instructed Christian is familiar with the words uttered in Gethsemane.  Perhaps Jesus prayed this prayer, not for Himself but for us.  He did that at the graveside of Lazarus. Jesus said to His Father, “I know that You always hear Me, but because of the people who are standing by I said this, that they may believe” (John 11:42).

By asking the Father to remove the cup from Him if there were any other way for man to be saved, He was proving to us that there was no other way. Jesus always gets his prayers answered.  If there was another way short of the death of the Son of God, it would have been revealed in answer to this prayer. I believe Jesus allowed His prayer to be public so that the world would know for certain that there is no other plan for our salvation.
