Memorial Day 2013

Observe Memorial Day with Gratitude

“There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”
John 15:13 (NLT)

On the last Monday of May, Americans pause to remember the men and women in our nation’s armed forces who gave their lives in service to our country.  This weekend, we encourage you to wave your flags high and reflect on the legacy every American shares – a legacy of hope, courage and freedom.

To all who have lost family members or friends, know that your fellow Americans will never forget what you and your loved one gave up to protect “liberty and justice for all.”

Many workers will take Monday off from work on Memorial Day, and many of us will be traveling, picnicking, swimming, shopping big sales, and a host of other activities.  But let’s remember why this day is special.

Every single human life matters.  And every life that was sacrificed for the sake of others is exceptional.  Though they lost their lives, they did not lose. They modeled John 15:12-13 and laid down their lives for people they would never meet… for future generations they would never see.  They loved with their very lives, just as Christ loves.

This Memorial Day lets keep gratitude in the forefront of our thoughts.  Let’s celebrate with the realization that our freedom was bought at an incredibly high price.
