Back to News

David Phelps’s brand new DVD, Freedom, is not yet available in stores BUT you can preorder your copy here starting right now!  (Freedom officially releases on DVD September 11, so this is a great chance to get yours first.)

Filmed in the barn David and his family converted into a beautiful concert venue, Freedom is packed with breathtaking moments featuring songs from his most recent CD, along with some extra performances and special guests to create a heartwarming musical experience from the first first note to the last.

Here’s what David Phelps himself has to say about the taping of Freedom.

The Freedom recording is definitely one of my more reflective projects to date.  With that in mind, I was so excited about the opportunity to film the concert video for this project at our family barn.  My hope was that it would be the perfect setting to capture the warmth that I feel in the music. Just the fact that it’s in our barn seems to put people at ease.  Kids are running around and swinging on the tire swing, old friends grab a rocking chair on the barn porch, and as the band is warming up you can sense the excitement in the air.  It really feels like a great big family reunion.  I have a great picture in my head of Wes and Andrea Hampton driving up — the car doors flew open and a hoard of boys darted out in swimsuits with towels wrapped around them cheering all the way to the pool.  When we finally got the point of starting, I couldn’t help but think of all the family and friends that pitched in to bring the event together.  I stepped on stage and just felt grateful and blessed.

I have so many favorite moments from that night. The drumline was an amazing addition.  They rocked the house as they marched in to the cadence of “I’m Coming Home.”  “Water,” the new duet I wrote with Gloria Gaither that I sang with my daughter, Maggie Beth, was definitely a highlight and something I will cherish forever.  And one of the most stunning moments was little Jimmy Daniels’ opening chorus on “Your Time Will Come” — chill bumps.  As we like to say, “There wasn’t a dry seat in the house!”  At the close of the evening, I had this idea that I wanted us all to march out if the barn to “When The Saints Go Marching In.”  We were all amazed that it worked!  To me it represented taking all the great moments we shared that night back out with us.  We’d come together in an intimate setting and praised & hoped together — now let’s keep it going and share it with the world!
